How can I know if my child is ready to be baptized?

A question that I get asked a lot is, "How can I know if my child is ready to be baptized?" Generally I judge this by whether or not the child grasps the concept of sin and what it does to our relationship with God. If they understand how sin separates us from God and therefore we are no longer in a relationship with Him, then they can understand the concept of Grace and Forgiveness and what God’s done to fix this problem. If a child understands the basics of salvation, then all they need to know about Baptism is that it’s a time of “show and tell.” It’s a time when we can demonstrate what God has done in our life (His salvation through Jesus Christ). Most parents want to wait until their child “fully understands” the symbolism and the “weight” of this moment. When generally, whether or not their baptism moment is significant in their life has more to do with how their parents follow it up in the days, weeks, and years to come. It’s for this reason I encourage parents to celebrate this moment as they would a sweet 16, a graduation, or some other “BIG EVENT” in their child’s life. The next question I get after that is, "What do I do once my child is ready to get baptized?" All 1st - 6th grade children desiring to get baptized need to attend a meeting with at least one parent/guardian. These meetings are designed for us to help you and your child understand the meaning of salvation and baptism. The baptism class consists of two sessions. The first session is educational in nature and the second session is where you and your child will meet with me (Jeff Mc Clung), our Children's Pastor, and make sure that your child is ready for water baptism. Our next baptism class will be THIS Sunday, July 18, at 9am in Trailer #5. You do not need to schedule an appointment for this class.  All you need to do is attend with your child. Meetings with me will take place on July 19 - 23. You will schedule this appointment at the class on the 18th. Baptism itself will take place during our weekend services on August 8 and 9.  If you have any questions please feel free to call our office at 760-245-2415 and we'd be glad to give you more information.
