Psalm 51:1-2 (NIV)

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

One thing is for sure, that as sinful human beings, we have a desperate need for God’s mercy (not getting what we deserve) in our lives. Out of His great compassion, He offers us His love and forgiveness, which allows us to offer love and forgiveness to those around us. Because we live in a fallen world, and there is sin in us, we need to be able receive forgiveness from Jesus for our sins on a regular basis (see 1 John 1:8-9). This is the beauty of having the Holy Spirit in our lives; we can pray to God anytime, anywhere, and come just as we are to ask for forgiveness. When we continue to live with our sin, that sin separates us from our relationship with God. Our salvation is still secure, but God can’t use us to further His kingdom in the same way when we hold onto our sin.  We begin to feel shame and guilt because the Holy Spirit convicts us. It is through the forgiveness and washing away of our sins that we can then be used by God to help change the world for His glory.

When Jesus forgives us of our transgressions, He is compassionate to us, as his children. When we feel His compassion in our lives, we get to offer that same compassion to others through the Holy Spirit. There may be people in our lives that are sometimes difficult to love, and we need the power of the Holy Spirit to help us love these people the way that Jesus would love them. Being a part of God’s mission to change the world is an exciting thing! We want to be holy and pleasing before God, and because of His great compassion for us, we can be!

Is there any particular sin in your life right now that you are struggling to ask forgiveness for? How might your life change for the better if you decided  to hand that sin over to Jesus today?
